SHOOTING IN TUNIS
A Tunisian soldier opened fire on colleagues at the Bouchoucha military base in the capital Tunis, killing a colonel and at least 6others. 10 soldiers were wounded before the attacker was shot dead. The Tunisian interior ministry said the incident is not viewed as a “terrorist attack.” Since the overthrow of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, Tunisia has been battling militant groups with links to ISIS and al Qaeda, which have carried out attacks on security forces.
ISIS EXECUTIONS
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has reported ISIS executed or arrested more than 800 Syrian regime forces after capturing the ancient city of Palmyra in Homs Province. SOHR said that ISIS is detaining at least 600 others, including regime forces, pro-regime militiamen and civilians. ISIS began executions two days after capturing Palmyra. Meanwhile, the Syrian regime executed at least 15 air strikes on buildings captured by ISIS in Palmyra.
MIGRANT MASS GRAVES
Prime Minister Najib Razak has stated he is “deeply concerned” about the discovery of mass graves of suspected migrants in the northern state of Perlis. He has pledged to find the parties responsible. Malaysia’s police chief Khalid Abu Bakar announced 139 grave sites have been found since May 11th. The graves are situated where Thai police recently located human trafficking camps and many shallow graves.
EU REFERENDUM RESTRICTIONS
The Conservatives announced that more than 1 million foreigners living in Britain will be banned from voting in the UK’s upcoming referendum regarding EU membership . Only British, Irish and Commonwealth residents will be allowed to vote. This includes Maltese and Cypriots, but excludes any other EU citizens. Additionally, UK citizens who have lived abroad for more than fifteen years will be barred from participating. Prime Minister David Cameron will meet European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker this evening in an effort to promote his pre-referendum campaign.
