The new Peugeot 5008 SUV is a complete change in shape and segment for this 7-seater. In this review, Daragh Ó Tuama travelled from Ireland to Lisbon, Portugal, to test drive the brand-new 2017 Peugeot 5008 SUV.

The model we are driving in this video is the 5008 2.0 litre BlueHDi with 150bhp. We also drove the 1.2 litre PureTech petrol model with 130 bhp mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. This car is built on the same platform as the new 3008 SUV, which was launched towards the end of 2016. The 5008 is 19 cm longer than the 3008, and the trim lines and engines are the exact same as what you'll find in the new 3008 SUV.

The 5008 was once an MPV with seven seats, but like many MPVs, the bus lacked visual flair - however, Peugeot has completely upped their game with the new 5008 SUV, and the results are excellent. The new 5008 has 60 mm of extra legroom, there's no transmission tunnel impeding on second row middle legroom, and each of the row-two seats are independent. They are on rails and can be reclined too. Row three is good for part time use only, because it impinges on most of the 1060 litres of boot space, and we tried get in ourselves - we fit, but it wasn't comfortable. It is however perfect for kids.

The new 5008 SUV is only available with front wheel drive, but to compensate for not having 4x4, the car has an excellent advanced grip control system, which we will look further into in a written review in the future. So... it does have some off-road capabilities. This traction control system improves traction on snow, mud and sand. The Hill Assist Descent Control, which we’ve tested once at the launch of the new Peugeot 3008 SUV, reduces the risk of slip when descending. This system will regulate speed while in descent.

The new 5008 features Peugeot's latest generation of iCockpit and the TFT displays are excellent - in our opinion, they are only second to Audi in this department.

This car is expected to be on sale in Ireland in time for the 172-registration plate period. Irish showrooms should receive some in and around June 2017.
