This past summer the MadforMaple crew had high hopes to cross off a bucket list wilderness backcountry canoe trip: The Steel River. This exciting route is about 170km long with 19 portages, located just North of Lake Superior in Steel River Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada. With a new challenge around every corner, the route consisted of a windy Santoy Lake, the grueling Diablo Portage, the mountainous Cairngorm and Steel Lakes, down the Steel River in high water, passing by Rainbow Falls, around log jams, and finishing back on Santoy Lake. In Part 1 of the aptly named “Tough as Steel” video series, we take on Diablo portage and make our way up Cairngorm Lake. Tune in to see how it went!
