On March 1, 2022, the Wildlife Rescue Unit of the Sintang Region II Conservation Section of the West Kalimantan BKSDA together with the Sintang Orangutan Center (SOC) evacuated a female orangutan named Bondan who was kept by residents in Bernayau Village, Sintang Regency.
This orangutan is approximately 4 years old and has been kept for approximately 3-4 years. The owner said that Bondan was obtained from the Bukit Berangin Forest (Km 109) in the Kayu Lapis area, when the his brother went to the forest. When found, Bondan was on the forest floor and not with her mother, at that time Bondan was still a baby (± 4-5 months) which actually still had to be with her mother. While being kept, she is placed around the terrace of the house, which is exposed to rain and heat from the side, in addition to preventing Bondan from escaping, Bondan's neck is tied with a rope with a length of approximately 2-3 meters. Bondan is feed by sweetened condensed milk and seasonal fruit when the fruit season arrives. As a result, Bondan not get healthy nutrition and are malnourished.
After the evacuation, Bondan was entrusted to SOC to undergo health and behavioral rehabilitation. Currently Bondan is at the SOC quarantine center to undergo further health checks to ensure Bondan does not carry infectious diseases that can be transmitted to other orangutans in our rehabilitation center. In addition, the SOC medical team has also begun to improve Bondan's diet so that she can immediately return to health after experiencing malnutrition.
