A milestone for Taiwan – the island’s first recruits are beginning its new, longer military service.
Taipei hopes it will send a message to Beijing that it’s ready to defend itself against an attack.
The recruits are preparing for an eight-week boot camp they’re about to undergo before they get sent to various units around the main island of Taiwan.
This group is the very first to undergo the one-year military service.
The change was announced just over a year ago, and it’s a way of showing China that the island is taking its defence seriously.
