STORYLINE:
British Prime Minister Tony Blair paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on Monday before leaving India for Islamabad for talks with Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf.
Accompanied by his wife Cherie, Blair led a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial in New Delhi.
India's founding father, Mahatma Gandhi was killed at a prayer meeting in Delhi on 30 January, 1948, by a fellow Hindu, Nathuram Godse.
More than 50 years after his death, Gandhi - whose name "mahatma" means "great soul" - continues to provoke strong passions in India.
In Islamabad, Blair is to press Pakistan's government to make an unequivocal condemnation of terrorism as a step toward defusing a dangerous showdown with India.
