In St. John's, Newfoundland, as a snowstorm blanketed the city, Shawn Leroux opted for a unique mode of transportation: cross-country skiing. While many begrudgingly grabbed their shovels, Leroux, the youth development coordinator with the Avalon Nordic skiing club, seized the opportunity to ski laps around a field near the provincial legislature building.

Despite Environment Canada's warnings of up to 85 centimeters of snow accumulation by Saturday morning, Leroux embraced the winter wonderland, seeing it as an extended skiing season. Reflecting on the mounting drifts, he anticipated more weeks of skiing ahead.

This storm marked the second significant snowfall in less than a month for eastern Newfoundland, with accumulations expected across the island's northern Avalon Peninsula. While some downtown streets remained unplowed, accumulations around the city reached approximately 30 centimeters by Friday afternoon.

Despite variations in snowfall and rain, Leroux appreciated St. John's outdoor winter activities, comparing it favorably to his experiences in Edmonton and Ottawa. Despite lower-than-normal snowfall levels, Leroux enjoyed an abundant ski season, logging about 500 kilometers on the trails so far.

For Leroux and other snow enthusiasts, Newfoundland's winter season remains a cherished opportunity for outdoor recreation, even amidst fluctuating snow conditions and occasional rain.
