Carol Reed has long been overlooked, for his light touch and generally "anti-auteur" approach. He believed that a truly great film should always be accessible to the general public, and not only to intellectuals. Some have gone as far as to propose (the conspiracy theory) that his masterpiece "The Third Man" was actually the work of Orson Welles; a man who only ever spoke of Reed glowingly.
