On Saturday September 10, we invited a group of local high school students to visit the Emerald Hill library to begin a 4-week course introducing them to Rocket Science.
The course is presented by two students who are completing their university degrees in Aerospace engineering and science. They are literally rocket scientists. They both work for AYCI, a not-for-profit raising money to build a cube satellite to launch into space.
We are using a computer game called Kerbal Space Program to teach the course. It’s the only computer game approved by NASA.
The students explored the science and math's behind building rockets capable of flying to the moon and back. It’s perfect timing as NASA is attempting to go back to the moon this month as part of their new Artemis/SLS missions.
This breakthrough pilot project is a partnership with the Royal Society of Victoria, Public Libraries Victoria, Victorian Space Science Education Centre and the Australasian Youth Cubesat Initiative.
The program was funded by grants from Inspiring Victoria and Public Libraries Victoria.
Port Phillip Libraries would also like to thank the Digital and Technology team plus the Middle and Youth Team from the City of Port Phillip.
