How Invisalign Works // How Clear Aligners Work

In this video we will be answering “how does Invisalign and other clear aligners move teeth"
Clear aligners are an alternative in certain cases to traditional metal braces as a modality an orthodontist can use to aligner your teeth and improve your bite. The basic principles of tooth movement are the same, which I reviewed in a previous video, by providing precise forces to a tooth, but instead of using brackets and wires, we can use plastic. The tooth movement is planned on a computer and 3D models are printed on each step of the process. Your orthodontist uses his/her knowledge of bone biology and the underlying bone to make sure that your teeth are not only in an ideal position when compared to one another, but also in a proper position within the bone. The aligners are made off of these digitally planned steps and 3D printed models.
Certain tooth movements are harder to achieve than others, including rotations and extrusion. To help achieve these more difficult movements, your orthodontist may use attachments which can be added to your teeth temporarily. They serve as handlebars that the aligners can grip onto and deliver the ideal force level and force direction to achieve ideal tooth movement!
