In this session, Dr. Jie Fan-Roche, PT, NCMT discusses the practice of craniosacral therapy (CST) as a treatment for migraine and shares a bit of her personal experience as both a person living with migraine and a provider.
To set the stage, Dr. Fan-Roche introduces some of the original concepts shared by the father of osteopathy, A.T. Still. He believed that 1) The body is a unit, 2) Structure and function are related, 3) The body is self-correcting and 4) drugs may be harmful.
This presentation explains that craniosacral therapy (CST) is a technique using gentle manual palpation technique. It is different from massage therapy. CST is based on subtle rhythms in the fluid and connective tissues of the body. It involves releasing fascial restrictions in the cranial sutures, cerebral and spinal membranes and related connective tissues. Treatments involve light manual touch therapy with focus on 1) alleviating restrictions to bone motion 2) normalizing tensions and stresses in the meningeal membrane and fascia and 3) improving cerebrospinal fluid flow.
The presentation also includes a review of the nerves and muscles impacted with migraine attacks
