This famous experiment where alpha particles were aimed at a thin gold leaf gave unexpected results. Most of the alpha particles passed straight through implying that most of the atoms were just empty space. First performed about one hundred years ago this landmark experiment caused a complete rethink in our understanding of atomic structure.
