"My Mother's Violin" is a contemporary work for solo violin, written by a modern living composer from Greece, George Kontogiorgos.
Born in Lamia, Hellas, George Kontogiorgos studied advanced music theory with Alexander Aenian at the Municipal Conservatory of Lamia. His classical works include pieces for solo instruments, vocals, ensembles, chamber and symphonic orchestras, string quartets, piano trios and concertos.
Premieres of his music have been given in Canada, Colombia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Romania, Spain, Turkey, the UK and the US by the New Hellenic Quartet and Galan Trio, and by orchestras such as the Camerata of the Fiends of Music, the Orchestra of Colours and Orchestra of Patras in Greece, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in Poland, the International Doctors Philharmonia ‘Giuseppe Sinopoli’ in Italy, the Tapiola Sinfonietta in Finland and the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa in Spain.
He was awarded First Prize at the 2007 Classical Marimba League Composition Competition and received an Honorable Mention at the In 27 Pieces: The Hilary Hahn Encores contest in 2012. Ηe is visiting conductor of the Orchestra of Patras and a member of the Greek Composers’ Union.
