An increase of the so called "stress hormone", the cortisol, can lead to a condition called Cushing's syndrom.
So what are some symptoms of this condition and how to recognize it?
Well.. stretch marks, increased abdominal fat and sudden increased growth of facial hair are all symptoms of this condition.
That is widely known. What was interesting to me is that this is a syndrom. This is not a disease actually... As a cause for this syndrom, we can find many diseases that affect the pituitary gland but als the adrenal gland itself. One unlikely cause for this condition that truly got me surprised was the SCLC lung cancer.
SCLC lung cancer has an ectopic production of the so called ACTH hormone and this leads to a direct stimulation of the adrenal gland.
Well, as if it wasn't enough that lung cancer patients have to deal with extreme pain and coughing up blood, this condition can cause them additional suffering and it is always incredibly very stressful for the patients to go through all of that.
