In 1965 the School of Library and Information Services was founded at the University of Maryland. That year President Linden Johnson sent the first troops to Vietnam, Dr. Martin Luther King marched in Selma, Alabama, The Sound of Music won the Oscar for Best Picture and the Beatles had three number 1 hits on the charts.
Dr. Paul Wasserman, the school’s founding Dean, created a new type of library science program. The Maryland library school was built with an interdisciplinary faculty and was the first library science program in the county to require a technology class as a degree requirement. His vision of information services as a profession and the library as an innovative institution for individuals and society paved the way for our graduates to become transformation leaders in the field.
As one of the top 10 MLS programs in the country we are proud to honor our past and even more excited to look towards our future.
