We're interrupting with breaking news from Damascus. Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps is now claiming that several of its top commanders were killed in the Israeli airstrike that targeted the Iranian embassy compound in the Syrian capital overnight.
In a statement, the IRGC said the strike killed one of its brigadier generals who was based in Syria, along with several other senior officers. It warned of a "crushing" response against what it called the "Zionist crime."
If confirmed, the deaths of senior Iranian commanders would mark a significant escalation from this already high-stakes Israeli attack. It underscores the extent of Iran's military involvement and entrenchment in Syria in support of the Assad regime.
There has been no official comment yet from Israel, which rarely confirms individual strikes. But the targeting of the Iranian embassy itself was already seen as an unmistakable signal of Israel's determination to blunt Iran's expanding military foothold in Syria.
This attack comes just weeks after Israel and Iran's allies in the region, including Syrian forces, traded missile strikes in a severe flare-up of regional tensions.
With Tehran now confirming Iranian deaths and vowing retaliation, there are grave concerns this latest strike could trigger a fresh cycle of escalating violence between Israel on one side and Iran and its proxies on the other.
