Composite materials are now beginning to provide uses in structural systems hitherto reserved for metals such as airframes and engine containment systems, wraps for repair and rehabilitation, and ballistic/blast mitigation systems. In the United States, several governmental agencies recognized the importance of building a framework for composite systems by forming a public-private consortium in support of the Advanced Composites Project, which is part of the Advanced Air Vehicles Program in the agency’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. The project’s goal is to reduce product development and certification times by 30 percent for aeronautics applications. This talk will cover experimental methods and computer simulations in the FAA and NASA-sponsored R&D work done at Arizona State University. Examples include modeling of composite systems subjected to impact loadings – aircraft engine containment systems, low and high velocity impacts on aerospace composites, and structural systems.
About our speaker: Dr. Rajan began his academic career at Arizona State University in Fall 1983. His is presently a professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment. His research and teaching interests include the general area of finite element analysis and design optimization. He is the director of Computational Mechanics Lab where algorithms for high-performance computations are developed and implemented. Rajan has worked on research projects sponsored by government agencies such as NSF, NASA, FAA, ARO and FHWA, and private companies such as Motorola, Honeywell Engines, SRP, Tyco International, Alcon and HYI working in diverse areas as design optimization, parallel processing, constitutive material modeling, microelectronic packaging, web-based distant learning, impact mitigation, biomechanics and engineering software development. Rajan is the author of several books: "Intermediate Structural Analysis and Design," "Object-Oriented Numerical Methods via C++," and "Finite Elements for Engineers."
