A confluence of the new and the ancient as the Prime Minister inaugurated the revamped Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor in his constituency of Varanasi. A complex that was previously surrounded by buildings on three sides, has now been revamped to decongest the temple complex. Over 300 buildings were identified, purchased and subsequently demolished to make space for the corridor. The 400-metre long new corridor that's 75-metre wide connects the Kashi temple to the Ganga ghat and can accommodate 50,000 to 75,000 devotees. Ahead of the inauguration, the PM was welcomed with flowers in Kashi. And he took a holy dip in the Ganga before making his way to the new temple complex, where he thanked the workers who have been toiling away to make this ambitious project a reality. Around 3,000 guests, including Vedic scholars, priests and Hindu ascetics from all 11 other jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva attended the inauguration ceremony. The Kashi temple was built and demolished by invaders several times over the years.. it was revamped by Ahilyabai Holkar, queen of Indore in 1777. The latest revamp, that's come after centuries is expected to give Kashi a new cultural identity and prominence.
