Beyond having read a ton about the process, I begin inspecting the rig without much experience. I start disassembling a few things, including removing one of the spreaders and all of the turnbuckles off the stays.
In addition to what is pictured here, I also went over with a cotton cloth all the wire shrouds we intend to keep, making sure there were no hanging barbs. I also picked up a #4 Phillips bit so that I can take some of the fittings off the mast, a wire brush for cleaning up the stainless steel fittings before inspecting them, and a magnifying glass so that I can make a close inspection of the fittings. I will be using some of those things in the coming days.
We intend to replace four of the stays, check over everything else, and then put the mast up either after we have replaced the chainplates or after I have re-bedded the original ones (there is more on our decision-making process in that regard on our blog, www.returntoseasons.com).
