Cabin restaurants had originated in India (especially in Kolkata and Mumbai) almost one and a half century ago. Back then our society was much conservative and respectable women were not meant to be seen in public. So these plywood partitioned curtained cabins were introduced. These cabins enabled women to eat out with their families and also be away from the public view. Soon cabins became popular among the couples who were in search of a bit privacy in the city. Thus cabin restaurants played a admissible role in the development of Kolkata’s restaurant scene. Many of these old cabins are still around, though the separate sections are gradually disappearing. Main reason behind this is the fact that couples spend hours there over one soft drink or a shared chowmin which is not good enough for business. These places are recommended to them who like delish old Kolkata snacks with a dose of nostalgia.
Located at the college street crossing, Dilkhusha Cabin is one of those eateries that is serving The Kolkatians for more than a century. This place had the footsteps of Kaji Najrul Islam, Ganesh Pyne and many other renowned personalities. Earlier Dilkhusha had 6 cabins in it but they have done away with cabins in 2011. Now it is just a casual eatery with a formal seating arrangement.
