Niagara Falls is a shared treasure between the United States and Canada. Waters drain from Lake Erie down the Niagara River. They spill down the falls and then continue on to Lake Ontario.
The falls spill some 170 feet. On the Canadian side, there is Horseshoe Falls. On the American side, there is the American Falls.
The Niagara River was a fault line between cultures. On the Canadian side were the Huron, and on the American side the Iroquois. During colonial times, the French held Canada, and the British the future United States.
Fort Niagara is in Youngstown, New York. Fort George and Fort Mississauga are at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Fort Erie is on the Canadian side where Lake Erie drains into the Niagara River.
A battle was fought near Niagara Falls at Chippawa during the War of 1812.
Niagara Falls was visited by Father Louis Hennepin in 1678 who provided the first western description of the falls.
