The Valley of the Fallen (Valle de los Caídos) near Madrid, Spain, is a monument steeped in controversy and complexity. While it boasts impressive architecture and holds the remains of tens of thousands of people, its history and symbolism remain a point of contention in Spanish society.
Origins and Purpose:
Built by order of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco between 1940 and 1958.
Originally intended as a "national act of atonement" for the casualties of the Spanish Civil War.
Franco used it as a symbol of his regime and victory in the war.
Structure and Design:
Massive basilica carved into a mountainside, with a 490-foot cross towering above.
Interior adorned with religious sculptures and mosaics.
Crypt holds the remains of over 40,000 people, from both sides of the Civil War.
Note:
The Valley of the Fallen remains a sensitive topic in Spain. It's important to approach it with awareness of the complex and often conflicting narratives surrounding it.
