Ken-Betwa River Link Project (KBRLP) is a controversial initiative aimed at addressing water scarcity in Bundelkhand, covering parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The project, worth ₹44,605 crore, involves building the Daudhan Dam on the Ken River to channel "surplus" water to the Betwa River through a 221-km canal. It is expected to generate 103 MW hydroelectric power and provide irrigation to 10.62 lakh hectares of land. Proponents argue it will supply drinking water to 62 lakh people and alleviate water scarcity in Bundelkhand.
Critics, however, question its feasibility and ecological impact, as it may harm the Panna Tiger Reserve and disrupt local ecosystems. Experts are concerned about overestimating water availability and underestimating potential displacement of communities. Despite government assurances, skepticism about its long-term benefits persists. The KBRLP also symbolizes the ambitious plan for interlinking rivers across India, setting a high-stakes precedent for future projects.
