The plug-in hybrid covers 62 miles in electric mode and 621 miles in comprehensive range.
2024 Volkswagen Passat Variant
Volkswagen killed off the Passat in the United States after 2022MY, but the midsize family car remained in Europe with more sophisticated MQB underpinnings. The Old Continent gets the ninth generation of Wolfsburg's best-selling brand ever, after the Golf but ahead of the Beetle. Since the vehicle was launched in 1973, VW has delivered over 30 million units. The new B9 comes literally as a wagon, as the sedan is officially dead.
Featuring revised underpinnings (MQB Evo) shared with the upcoming next-gen Tiguan and Golf Mk8 facelift, the 2024 Passat Variant is significantly larger than the old European-spec B8. It now extends to 193.5 inches (4,917 millimeters) in length, making it significantly 5.7 inches (144 mm) longer than its predecessor. Width increased by 0.8 inches (20 mm) to 72.9 inches (1852 mm), while height remained largely unchanged at 59.2 inches (1506 mm). The wheelbase has been extended by 1.97 inches (50 mm) to 111.8 inches (2841 mm).
While not revolutionary, the styling isn't evolutionary either, as there have been a lot of changes as VW has harmonized the new Passat with the design of its electrified ID models. Seen recently without any camouflage, the ID.7 Variant looks a little more futuristic, but the similarities are easy to spot. As usual, the skin will depend on trim level: Passat, Business, Elegance and R-Line. Newly developed matrix LED headlights and dynamic LEDs at the rear where a light bar is fitted, as well as wheels up to 19 inches will be offered.
The interior represents a complete departure from the Passat B8 as VW has eliminated most of the switchgear. Even on the base model, you'll be able to access almost all available functions from the 12.9-inch touchscreen. For an additional fee, the infotainment system can be enlarged up to 15 inches. An all-digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster is standard, so the German brand is saying goodbye to the beautiful analog dials offered on the previous Passat.
By moving the gearshift lever onto the steering column, the engineers were able to free up space between the seats for extra cargo capacity in the same way as on the ID.7. As a reflection of the electric sedan, there is a new switch on the left that controls the turn signals and wipers. Comfort at the front can be increased by opting for the new heated, ventilated and massage seats with 14-way electrical adjustment.
This aforementioned increase in size not only increased legroom, but also increased luggage compartment capacity by 1.41 cubic feet (40 litres) with the rear seats removed to 24.3 cubic feet (690 l). When you fold the bench, the volume goes up to 67.8 cu ft (1,920 l), or much more than the previous Passat Variant, to 4.9 cu ft (140 litres).
The engine range is extensive and includes a mild hybrid petrol unit for the first time in Passat history. The 1.5-liter eTSI has cylinder deactivation technology and 148 horsepower (110 kilowatts). Next up is the larger 2.0 TSI with 201 hp (150 kW) with front-wheel drive and a more powerful configuration with 261 hp (195 kW) and 4Motion all-wheel drive.
If you still want a diesel in 2024, VW has you covered with the 2.0 TDI, available in three tuning options: 121 hp (90 kW) and 148 hp (110 kW) and 190 hp (142 kW) with AWD as FWD models. All petrol and diesel versions of the new Passat power the road with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
There are also plug-in hybrids marketed as "eHybrid" models. The base model offers 201 hp (150 kW) and 258 pound-feet (350 Newton-meters) of torque, while the more powerful model produces 268 hp (200 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), making it the most powerful. Passat can be bought for money. These two PHEVs feature a 1.5-liter TSI, a six-speed DSG and a 19.7 kWh battery pack that provides an electric range of up to 100 kilometers.
With the new generation Passat, VW has implemented DC fast charging support at 50 kW to boost the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in about 25 minutes. With the battery charged and a full tank of gas (11.9 gallons or 45 litres), you will be able to cover approximately 621 miles (1,000 kilometers) before refueling.
The 2024 VW Passat, which will be presented to the public at IAA Munich next week, is scheduled to go on sale in the first quarter of next year.
