Scorpene diesel-electric submarines manufactured by French defense contractor Naval Group (formerly DCNS), suitable for Philippine needs.
"This (Scorpene diesel-electric submarine) is an excellent submarine, suitable for our needs," Defense Minister Delfin Lorenzana said in a message to the Philippine News Agency when asked about the project's update late Monday.
Lorenzana said he could see French-made submarines during his visit to France last week.
He went there shortly after his trip to South Korea with President Rodrigo Duterte for the ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemoration Summit held on November 24-26.
"Yes, we went to see Scorpene," Lorenzana told PNA but gave no additional details.
The DND chief arrived in the Philippines after his trip to France on Sunday night. Previously, Lorenzana said Scorpene was one of the submarines that was being evaluated by the Philippine Navy (PN) for the planned submarine arm.
Scorpene class submarines are equipped with diesel and additional airless propulsion. It can be armed with various mines, torpedoes and missiles for various missions. It also has a top speed of 20 knots.
He added that if the PN submarine acquisition program was encouraged, it would be obtained through government-to-government procurement.
"The submarine, if we finally decide to buy it, will be in government-to-government procurement and under a loan so we don't need a large capital outlay," he said in an earlier interview.
In addition to French-made Scorpene, Lorenzana said DND was looking at proposals made by Russia, South Korea and Germany.
