President Joe Biden's plan to give full-time American workers 12 weeks of paid time off was removed from his Build Back Better proposal, handing the White House a stinging loss to the domestic policy plan.
The $1.75 trillion proposal includes new programs for health care, child care and climate change but paid family leave was cut after West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin refused to back it. With a 50-50 split in the Senate, Democrats needed 100% support of Biden's proposal to ensure it would pass. When Manchin refused to budge, Democrats had to cut the paid family leave proposal that would have set aside $225 billion for Americans who recently had a child or are recovering from illness.
The United States is just 1 of 6 countries worldwide that doesn't require paid family leave. The U.S. is also 1 of 8 countries without a national maternity leave program for new mothers. Bureau of Labor statistics show that just 23% of private industry workers have access to paid family leave. #WakeUpCLT #BuildBackBetter #FMLA
