The Honda Accord has a straightforward cabin with a simple center stack and large, no-frills controls and knobs. The learning curve is essentially nonexistent, which is exactly what we want for in a car with broad appeal. With its large door apertures, getting in and out of the car is simple, albeit taller passengers should keep their heads on the sloping roofline while entering the back seat. Taller back passengers may also scrape the headliner, but overall space in both rows is excellent, with enough legroom.
Because of the thin windshield pillars and a large back window, the view from the driver's seat is unobstructed. However, raising the driver's seat too high made it impossible to view the entire gauge cluster, which might be problematic for shorter drivers.
We evaluated the Accord Sport-L, which features a hybrid drivetrain. It works well in everyday driving to increase fuel efficiency while maintaining performance. At Edmunds' test track, our Sport-L test vehicle went from 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds, which is approximately a second faster than most competing midsize hybrid sedans. Although this powertrain lacks a traditional transmission, Honda has carefully engineered it to modify engine rpm to mimic the familiar shifting sensation of an automatic transmission. In terms of handling and steering, the Accord corners well but lacks the innate athleticism of previous Accords.
The Accord does an excellent job of keeping undesirable noises out of the cabin. The driver's seat in the Accord, like in other Honda vehicles, could use a little extra cushioning, but it offers enough adjustment to make practically anyone comfortable behind the wheel. The climate control system is more than enough for heating and cooling the vehicle.
Our test car's 19-inch wheels provided an excellent ride quality. It absorbed big blows and bruises with ease and maintained its poise throughout our time together. We believe that the EX-L grade, with its smaller wheels, would be even better.
