In Vedic Astrology, the Dasha Period of a planet influences the individual either positively or negatively based on the planet's dignity in the birth chart. If the planet is considered malefic in the native's Janam Kundli, its Dasha period is believed to bring unfavorable outcomes. Conversely, if the planet is considered benefic, the Dasha period is expected to be favorable. It is most widely used dasha in astrology. A specific time period is allocated to all 9 planets in this method. There is a full cycle of 120 years for Maha dashas of all the nine planets. This cycle has been divided into 9 parts and every part is governed by certain planet in Astrology.
According to this system, the average age of human is considered as 120 years so that he may have gone through each Maha dasha in his whole lifespan. In ancient times, the average age may have been so much, but it is decreasing year on year and hence it came down to 50-60 years currently. Few years back, the average age was considered as 60-70 years. You can see the graph of decreasing age of humans. Maharishi Parashar, the author of the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, one of the most authoritative texts on Vedic Astrology, describes various types of planetary Dasha periods. The sage explains Dashas such as Ashtottari, Shodsottari, Panchottari, etc., emphasising that the Vimshottari Dasha is the most suitable for the people in the Kaliyuga era. He affirms that the Vimshottari Dasha spans 120 years, aligning with the expected lifespan of people in the Kaliyuga period, which makes it the best one to use for the current era.
