In US news and current events today, oceans cover approximately 60% of the Earth’s surface, hiding what lies beneath. This animation, originally made by NASA in 2008 and recently updated by planetary scientist James O’Donoghue, reveals the Earth’s longest mountain range and ancient land bridges, that are hidden in the depths of the world’s oceans. O’Donoghue now works at the Japanese space agency, JAXA and he said he slowed the video to show how shallow some of the features lie. The first moments of the video reveal the continental shelves, or the undersea edges of each of the Earth’s 7 continents. The shelves include the land bridges our ancestors used to walk from one continent to another. Once the sea levels drop 2,000-3,000 meters, the world’s longest mountain chain, the mid-ocean ridge, is revealed The ridge stretches more than 37,000 miles across the Earth, and 90%+ is hidden underwater. By the time the ocean is drained down to 11,000 meters below sea level, the deepest part of the ocean, the Mariana Trench is revealed.
