With wide and extensive views across meadows, creeks and marshes. Taking in views of Brightlingsea marina, we round St Osyth Stone Point, walking past a Martello Tower (now an aviation and 1940s museum) and on to Point Clear Bay, taking in beautiful sunny views of Brightlingsea Reach and Sandy Point. Then we're back on the road for a while, before cutting through farmers fields, along hedgerow and back towards St Osyth, with just enough time to have a nose around the church of St Peter & St Paul.
The small village of St Osyth is dominated by its priory, founded in the early 12th century as a house of Augustinian canons. After its dissolution in 1539, a large house was built on the site, incorporating many of the monastic structures, and this was subsequently extended both in the 18th and 19th centuries. The 15th century gatehouse is considered one of the finest in the country and is the main survival of the medieval monastery.
