The world's population, as of today, is expected to have reached 8 billion, according to the United Nations.
The UN called it a milestone in human development because of the advancements in medicine that made it possible.

The global population is projected to reach 8 billion on November 15th, which is being called "a milestone in human development" by the United Nations.
The UN made the projection in its World Population Prospects 2022 report that was released in July.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement that the projection is something to celebrate, paying tribute to advancements in medicine that have extended lifespans and reduced maternal and child mortality rates.
The population has doubled in the space of five decades after hitting 4 billion in 1974.
It exceeded 7 billion in 2011, a little over a decade ago.
Although the global population is growing at its slowest rate since 1950, the UN estimates it to exceed 9 billion in 15 years.
The UN also projects the global population to grow to around 8-point-5 billion in 2030, 9-point-7 billion in 2050, and peak at around 10-point-4 billion during the 2080s.
Officials said that lower-middle-income and low-income countries contributed the most, and will likely continue to do so in reaching the next milestone.
The population growth rate was at its highest in the early 1960s, but has rapidly slowed down, having fallen under 1 percent in 2020.
The population continues to grow, however, due to increased life expectancy and because the fertility rate is at 2-point-1 births per woman, roughly the level required for zero growth.
Global life expectancy reached 72-point-8 years in 2019, an improvement of almost 9 years since 1990.
Asia and Africa contributed most to the global population growth.
India is projected to overtake China as the most populated country in the world sometime next year.
The UN also explained that countries of sub-Saharan Africa are expected to contribute more than half of the increase anticipated through 2050.
