Chinese President Xi Jinping failed to show up at the Brics Business Forum in the South African capital Johannesburg on August 22, 2023. Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao delivered the speech in Xi’s place. In it, he accused the US of targeting countries that threaten its global dominance. The Chinese leader met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Pretoria on the same day, but no explanation was given for Xi’s absence at the Brics forum.
