For my Solid Mechanics Lab course at SDSU. Here, a steel bar of circular cross section is tested in torsion. The bar's diameter is 0.75", length is 16", Poisson's Ratio 0.25, and Young's Modulus 30,000 ksi. Two strain gauges are glued to the specimen in the principal directions. That is, each are 45 degrees from the longitudinal axis. These are the principal stress directions. The machine is a Riehle torsion testing machine, and the strains are measured using a B.L.H. strain indicator.
