STORYLINE:
At least 45 people were killed on Friday after a bus collided with the wreckage of a truck that had been attacked by Taliban insurgents several days before.
The remains of the truck had been left in the middle of a narrow road for several days after insurgents opened fire on it in Maiwand district in Kandahar province.
Before sunrise on Friday, the bus smashed into the truck and both vehicles burst into flames, badly burning many of the bus passengers, said Abdul Razaq, the provincial police chief of Kandahar.
Javeed Faisal, the spokesman for the governor of Kandahar province said 10 others were injured.
The casualties included men, women and children.
"I don't care about my belongings and money that was burned inside the bus, but please find my brother dead or alive," said Mohammad Habib, who survived the crash and brother of one of the victims. "How will I face my mother without him?"
The bus began its journey in the capital of Helmand province and was scheduled to stop in Kandahar city, then travel north to Kabul, the Afghan capital, Razaq said.
