Wind power is becoming an ever more dominant force in global electricity grids. But it's 'dirty secret' is that the turbine blades are currently almost impossible to recycle. Now a team at the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) claims to have used plant-based biomass to create blades that can be completely broke down at the end of their operational lifetime and refabricated into new products.
