The 2024 Geminid meteor shower will peak on December 13-14. It will feature up to 120 meteors per hour, though a near-full moon may reduce visibility. Unlike most meteor showers originating from comets, the Geminids are caused by asteroid 3200 Phaethon, which uniquely develops a tail due to the release of sodium gas and other substances. The meteors are often bright and colorful, best viewed with the naked eye (and from a dark location).
