Indonesia's presidential selection committee began its largely
symbolic deliberations on Sunday (1/3), with incumbent President
Suharto already assured of a seventh consecutive term in office.
Dominated by Suharto loyalists and seen by critics as nothing
more than a rubber stamp, the committee - which is meeting in
fortress-like conditions in downtown Jakarta - will spend 11
days in discussion before formally returning the president for
another five-year term.
