STORYLINE:
Kenyan Catholics reacted favourably on Thursday to the appointment of the new Pope Francis, as they attended a mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Holy Family in Nairobi.
"It is good news for Kenya, we have a new president, now we have a new pope," said Catholic worshipper Margaret Wanjuiru.
There was speculation that the new Pope might be from Africa, where the number of Catholics grew from 55 (m) million to 146 (m) million between 1978 and 2007.
In 2009, Pope Benedict called Africa "an immense spiritual lung" for humanity.
During his papacy, Benedict showed a special regard for continent, appointing a higher percentage of Africans as cardinals than his predecessors.
Ghana's Cardinal Peter Turkson, appointed to the role in 2003 by Pope John Paul II, was widely viewed as the top African contender for pope.
But on Thursday Cardinal Bergoglio - who has taken the name Pope Francis - became the first pontiff from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium.
"I think the Holy Spirit hovers where he wants," said Father Simon Nganga.
"For us, it is only to accept," he added.
