The Lucy mission will be the first spacecraft to explore a group of asteroids known as the Trojans. These asteroids orbit the Sun at the same distance as Jupiter around two gravitational balance points that lead or follow Jupiter in its orbit. These asteroids were captured during an early, chaotic phase of solar system formation and as such, preserve a kind of fossil record from more than 4 billion years ago. During this talk, Dr. Keith Noll, the Project Scientist for the Lucy mission, discusses the Lucy spacecraft which will fly by 8 different asteroids during a 12-year mission (which is a record!). This was recorded on October 7, 2021.
We’re launching STEM Engagement to new heights with learning resources that connect teachers, students, parents and caregivers to the inspiring work at NASA. Join us as we apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics to explore space, improve aeronautics, examine Earth and strive to land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon with the Artemis program.
