Dr Michael Leiter:
What's going to happen the next time that we encounter each other?
So that kind of... It has a lot going down the road in terms of just sort of people's mental wellbeing at work I think. And what we found with, you know, the quality of the interactions is definitely related to like all three aspects of burnout and not only that, you know, people who experience incivility are going to feel more particularly cynical that exhaustion and cynicism particularly kick in.
But people who are experiencing exhaustion and cynicism are also going to behave socially less well, they're going to be more rude. Like when you're really exhausted and cynical and just, you know, it's hard to be really nice to other people, you know, and those who receive a lot of instability also, there's a correlation between what is received and what is given. So you end up perpetuating and that's part of where the work group dynamics become embedded, is that people are exchanging back and forth a lot of these kinds of things. So all that really moves away from a socially as well psychologically healthy kind of workplace.
