"Off the Coast of the British Isles" is a three-part tribute to therich folk music tradition of Great Britain and Ireland. A German critic once famously criticized England as “the land without music” thanks to its shortage of acclaimed composers. Whilst western Europe has certainly dominated our
concert halls for centuries, the British Isles – especially Ireland – have
an equally strong voice in the folk music world. Many of these tunes
survive till today and have an undeniably “British” or “Irish” sound;
this piece is a celebration of that sound.
The first movement is a waltz inspired by the sweeping fields of
England, full of long interweaving lines that seem to sway in the
breeze. The second movement takes the form of a quintessential
British hymn as is usually played by a traditional brass band. When
played on strings however, the sound is far more intimate and
allows for a slower tempo. Moving over to Ireland, the final
movement is a brisk jig, requiring the violins to channel their inner
fiddles whilst the cello lets loose loud drones and aggressive chords
to drive the piece home.
