In the special election that was held on April 24th, New York State Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer, a Democrat, was elected to fill the 37th District seat in the New York state Senate that had been previously held by now Westchester County Executive George Latimer. According to unofficial results, Mayer received 57% of the vote while her Republican opponent, Julie Killian, received 43%.
While the victory by Mayer will give Democrats a majority with 32 out of 63 seats, Republicans retain control due to the help of Democrat Simcha Felder who has stated that he will caucus with them for the time being. Mayer will have to run again in November in order to keep her seat on the Senate.
