The conceptualisation of workers in mainstream economic theory, and its’ subsequent impact on safeguarding policies, has resulted in dismal protection to them during the pandemic. The session will focus on the impact of Covid-19 on the workers with special recognition to those engaged in ‘informal work’ in the Indian economy.
Surbhi Kesar
Surbhi Kesar is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru where she teaches development economics, political economy & applied micro-econometrics. Her research areas include informal economy, processes of structural transformation, decolonised approaches to economics & more . She received her PhD in Economics from South Asian University, New Delhi and has been a Fulbright Fellow at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Her work includes analysing the impact of Covid-19 on the Indian economy. Dr Kesar is a co-principal investigator of the APU Covid-19 Livelihoods Survey that measures the economic impact of the lockdown on livelihoods in India, and is a co-author of the recently released State of Working India report 2021 on the impact of Covid-19 on the Indian economy.
