Let other people have cats and dogs! Jungle Bob is here to show you that owning a pet reptile or amphibian is not as complicated as you might think. In this video, he shares three tips about caring for an African clawed frog.
For people wanting a really low maintenance, low cost reptile or amphibian pet there's nothing that beats the African Clawed Frog. These are a completely aquatic frog, meaning they never come out of the water like most frogs want to do from time to time. They swim and stay under the water for long periods of time, and they're so simple to keep it's almost funny.
Number one, they are completely tolerant of abuse, and misuse. If you forget to clean the tank, if you go away on vacation for a couple of weeks and forget to even feed the frogs, they are completely tolerant of making a mistake. Their tenacity is legendary, and their ability to stay alive in conditions that other animals would perish in is also legendary.
They'll eat almost anything. Easy thing for them to take care of them is prepackaged newt or frog bites . They're little tiny granules you'll drop in there, and they'll go around and find them.
They're very animated when it comes to eating. Their eyes are fixed at the top of their head, and their fingers, their front forelimbs are almost like fingers, and they are constantly looking for something that's falling down from above, and when they see it come they'll run over, and they'll grab it and they'll push the food in their mouth, and I haven't seen them turn down anything that's organic. Anything that's meat, live or dead they'll pretty much go after. You put in any kind of small fish or some other animal with them, eventually they will eat them too.
They are really a survivor. We've heard stories of people who have thrown them outside in an effort to dispose of them and they fell on the ground where an amphibian would normally die and they came back when the rains came a couple of weeks later the frogs emerged again out of the ground. They have an ability to survive in really terrible, terrible conditions, even dried out conditions, and they spring back to life.
So, if you're looking for something that's low maintenance, you keep in a fishbowl that eats everything you put in front of it. We gave ours chicken the other day and it ate a piece of Kentucky Fried, so these are really easy animals to keep, the African Clawed Frogs.
