STORYLINE:

In Nablus, a prominent Hamas militant was killed by a car bomb on Monday evening, as Israeli incursions into Palestinian towns in the West Bank continued.

Ayman Halaweh, 26, was killed when the car he was travelling in exploded.

His funeral was held on Tuesday and was attended by thousands of mourners.

Two other Palestinian passengers were injured in the explosion.

Palestinians blamed Israel for the bomb blast, claiming the car was booby-trapped.

Though the Israeli government and military did not claim responsibility for the death of Ayman Halaweh, Palestinian Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo called it an Israeli "criminal attack and a call for an escalation."

The Israeli Prime Minister's Office put out a statement saying that Halaweh was at the top of the list of militants Israel had asked the Palestinian Authority to arrest.

The statement said Halaweh was a master bomb-maker who had constructed the devices suicide bombers used to kill dozens of Israelis in blasts at a Tel Aviv disco and a Jerusalem restaurant, as well as other bombings.
