Thomas Baden-Riess argues that in certain areas of the world, humans developed a trait where they could digest meat better than other humans and passed this trait on, through natural selection. This in turn means that descendants are unable to digest plants effectively and can't thrive on a vegan diet.
Because the process by which traits appear in populations is through random mutations, you can't know for certain that such a trait existed and more evidence is required.
