Bongo Says Bye To Politics | Firstpost Africa
Gabon's ex-president Ali Bongo, who was ousted in a military coup last year has announced he is quitting politics. In a letter addressed to the people of Gabon, Bongo said he was withdrawing from political life. He also asked for clemency for his imprisoned wife and son who he said are facing violence and torture. Bongo's son and wife are in detention awaiting trial on corruption allegations. 65-year-old Bongo was overthrown by the military last year in August shortly after he won in a disputed election. He ruled the oil-rich nation for 14 years. He succeeded his father, who ruled Gabon for 40 years. The family is known to have strong links to France, which is a former colonial power in Gabon. Watch for more details.
