Amnesty International reported on May 16, 2023, that 883 people were executed worldwide in 2022, the highest figure in five years and more than double the number in 2021. China is said to have topped the grisly ranking with ‘thousands’ of executions, although exact figures are unknown because the death penalty there is considered a state secret. Amnesty’s report also says nearly 40 per cent of all known executions in 2022 were for drug-related offences, including 11 executions in Singapore.
