Bong Sao & Lap Sao: Core Drills and Variations
In this video, we’ll be working on the foundation of Bong Sao and Lap Sao, which are fundamental techniques in Wing Chun. These techniques are essential for deflecting attacks and countering with precision.
We begin with the Bong Sao Lap Sao combination, practicing step-by-step footwork: half front step, half rear step, and making sure to keep the Wu Sao in the correct position. The focus here is on controlling the opponent’s energy and applying the correct pressure when engaging, whether it’s a high round punch, a low round punch, or another type of strike. It’s important to work slowly and methodically, ensuring your footwork and hand movements are in sync. The goal is to move efficiently, applying pressure where needed, and avoiding any unnecessary overpowering of the opponent’s attack.
Blocking and Hitting Simultaneously
A significant concept in Wing Chun is learning how to block and hit at the same time. We discuss variations like Pak Sao, Gan Sao, Bil Sao, and Biu Sao, depending on the situation. You’ll notice how a low round punch may require a Gan Sao, whereas a high round punch may need a Bil Sao or Pak Sao to deflect while immediately striking.
We train with an emphasis on timing and placement, ensuring the punch or strike comes after the block, not before. Training this way helps improve reaction time and the ability to counter effectively in real situations.
Footwork and Movement
Proper footwork is a core element of Wing Chun, especially when performing drills like Bong Sao and Lap Sao. It’s not just about the arms; your feet must coordinate with the movement. Practice with back steps and side steps to maintain distance, angle, and control. We also integrate back stepping with Pak Sao Chun Sao drills, making sure to coordinate with every step for maximum control and positioning. Whether you’re practicing low round punches, or high punches, being aware of your foot placement can make all the difference in your success.
Combining Drills and Free Flowing
As we progress, we introduce free-flowing drills where you are encouraged to mix and match different techniques—whether it's blocking or hitting. The idea is to apply pressure testing in a controlled way and learn how to move fluidly between techniques. The goal is to make the bridge (the transition from attack to defense) feel natural and smooth, with no hesitation or sloppiness in execution.
Training Focus: Precision Over Speed
At this stage of training, the emphasis is not on speed, but on clean technique. Don’t rush—take the time to make sure each move is executed properly. Clean technique is key to building good muscle memory, so focus on making each motion precise and efficient.
Conclusion
In this training session, we focused on Bong Sao, Lap Sao, and their variations, while emphasizing proper footwork, timing, and the ability to block and strike simultaneously. As you progress, continue practicing these techniques slowly and methodically until they become second nature. Whether you are training for self-defense, competition, or fitness, mastering these drills will significantly enhance your Wing Chun practice.
