The French composer and pianist Georges Jean Pfeiffer (1835-1908) was born at Versailles; his father. Émile was a partner in the Pleyel, Wolff et Cie piano manufacturing business (in which Pfeiffer himself would later succeed him), and his mother had studied piano with Chopin and Kalkbrenner. After studying at the Paris Conservatory, Pfeiffer pursued a career as a performer and composer, and as a performer, he was particularly active in the realm of chamber music serving as pianist for several French chamber music societies. Pfeiffer wrote in many genres: opera, operetta, oratorio and orchestral music, as well as piano works. However, it is his chamber music that seems to receive most attention today, with recent recordings of one of his piano trios. He was a highly skilled composer for the piano, as evidenced by some engaging piano works that have recently been digitized and become available. Don't be put off by its boring title: 'Difficultés de lecture et style lié' (Difficulties of note reading and legato style). ' It comes from a set of studies, published around 1889, and intended to prepare the player for the study of the Cramer studies. This is a top-drawer study, which somehow combines the compositional style of Cramer with Schumannesque sentiment, and a Beethovenian depth.
